Campervan Kitchen Pod with Fridge: Check Fit, Access and Storage

A campervan kitchen pod with fridge can keep several daily jobs in one compact unit: preparing food, washing up and putting groceries away. The challenge is fitting those jobs into the space around the unit. A fridge that fits the cabinet can still be difficult to open beside a bed or opposite a bench.

Choose the furniture and appliance together. Begin with your overall kitchen layout, then use the checks below to turn a promising pod into a workable plan.

Use the full appliance envelope

Record the exact fridge model and obtain its installation drawing. Identify the cabinet opening, overall body, door thickness, handle projection, fittings and required clearances. These are different measurements; a capacity in litres does not tell you the cupboard size.

Draw the pod from the front and from the side. Place the sink bowl, tap fittings and waste route above or alongside the fridge. Check that the complete combination fits, including the worktop and any structure between compartments. Resolve clashes on the drawing before modifying furniture.

Open the door on the floor plan

Mark the fridge door’s movement with tape or a cardboard template. Test it with the bed in both day and night positions. Check that you can reach a lower shelf without bracing yourself against the opposite furniture.

Also test the opening needed to remove internal drawers and shelves for cleaning. Some arrangements allow everyday access but restrict full withdrawal of an internal compartment. Confirm door reversal options for the exact model rather than assuming every fridge can be changed.

Think about two people using the van. If one person is seated at the table, can the other put milk away? If the answer depends on moving the table every time, consider a different position or door arrangement while changes are still easy.

Give ventilation a real route

Follow the fridge manufacturer’s requirements for the appliance you buy. The Dometic RC10 installation manual, for example, provides model-specific installation and ventilation instructions. A gap copied from another fridge or a few decorative slots is not a substitute for the correct manual.

Show where air enters and leaves the installation and keep the required space clear of bags, bedding and stored groceries. Include any grille or access panel in the furniture drawing. If the appliance is changed later, check the new requirements again.

Separate food storage from service space

The space behind an appliance can look like spare storage on a simple plan. It may instead be needed for ventilation, connections or maintenance. Define which compartments hold food and which areas need to remain accessible and clear.

  • Plan where dry food, pans and cutlery will travel.
  • Keep access to the sink connections practical.
  • Allow the fridge to be removed using its intended procedure.
  • Check that worktop fixings and neighbouring doors remain reachable.

Ask a competent installer to plan the electrical supply and protection for the appliance. Furniture dimensions do not establish whether the van’s power system is suitable. Use the exact fridge specification when discussing expected use and power availability.

Load it as if you were leaving for a trip

Make a sample grocery list for the number of days you normally travel between shops. Include the awkward shapes: a tall bottle, a lunch box and fresh vegetables. Check the usable shelves and compartments rather than comparing total capacity alone.

Then put the rest of the kitchen equipment on your plan. A larger fridge may be worthwhile, but losing the only useful pan cupboard can create a new problem. Keep a clear preparation area and avoid relying on the table for every cooking task.

Check what the quoted pod includes

Establish whether the price covers furniture only, a worktop cut-out, an actual fridge, water equipment or installation. Ask for a clear equipment list and final dimensions. A product image may show optional appliances.

Browse NEVAN’s vehicle-specific kits, then confirm the proposed fridge and kitchen arrangement before placing an order. Availability and appliance fit need checking for your particular configuration.
