Campervan fixed bed ideas often focus on the mattress and the view through the rear doors. The space beneath deserves just as much attention. A comfortable permanent bed can still create an awkward interior if everyday items disappear into a deep garage.
Decide which things you want to reach from inside and which can be reached from the rear. This simple split helps establish the bed front, storage openings and overall bed height.
Divide the under-bed contents by access
Put bedding, clothes and items needed in bad weather on one list. Put outdoor chairs, long equipment bags and campsite setup items on another. Some things may need access from both sides, but most have an obvious first-choice opening.
Try the routine in night mode. Can you reach an extra blanket without going outside? Can another person take a jacket out while someone remains in bed? Avoid relying on lifting the whole mattress for every small task.

Choose height from both sides of the platform
Measure the tallest equipment that genuinely needs to live under the bed. Then check the sleeping surface above it with the intended mattress thickness included. Sit up, turn over and try the route into and out of bed.
A small reduction in stored equipment height can sometimes preserve valuable space above the mattress. Compare packing options before raising the entire platform. The mattress guide explains why mattress thickness and bed height should be chosen together.
Include the finished floor and ceiling in the mock-up. Bare-van measurements exaggerate the room that will remain once the conversion is complete.
Make front hatches useful rather than decorative
A hatch needs enough clear opening for the intended item and your hands. Check the direction it opens and the space needed in front. A door can be easy to use in an empty aisle but blocked once a table or portable bag is there.
- Put small daily items close to a front opening.
- Give larger boxes a straight removal route.
- Check hinges and catches against nearby furniture.
- Keep the bed’s specified supports intact.
Have any changes to structural bed panels assessed by the furniture designer. Cutting a larger opening can affect more than access. Use an arrangement designed to support the bed and its intended load.

Keep rear access workable on a real pitch
Allow room outside to open the rear doors and remove equipment. Think about how close you normally park to a hedge, wall or neighbouring vehicle. A full-width sliding storage platform needs more external space than a small bag taken out by hand.
Consider what remains accessible when the van is loaded for travel. If the first bag blocks everything else, change the order or compartment layout. Our garage storage guide covers sorting equipment by its removal route.
Leave the bed and services easy to inspect
Follow the mattress and bed suppliers’ requirements for support and ventilation. Plan how you will lift or move bedding to inspect the base, and keep required equipment clearances unobstructed underneath.
Also check access to plumbing, electrical equipment and other services in the garage. The furniture should allow the necessary inspection and maintenance without turning every job into a bed dismantling exercise.
Before choosing a NEVAN layout, confirm the finished bed dimensions, height and storage openings. Bring the actual equipment measurements so the conversation is about usable access, not just total under-bed volume.
